Good News, UK Drivers! The Iconic Renault Twingo is Coming Back - in Right-Hand Drive!

Get ready for a blast from the past, reimagined for the electric future! We're thrilled to share the exciting news that the new, all-electric Renault Twingo is officially confirmed for the UK in right-hand drive!

Renault boss Fabrice Cambolive himself has put an end to any doubts, confirming to Autocar that the fourth generation of this beloved city car will be making its way to our shores soon after its launch in mainland Europe next year.

For those with fond memories of the original Twingo from the 1990s, you might recall that the UK had to wait until the second generation to experience its charm. Concerns had been raised about the cost of converting the new electric model to right-hand drive, echoing that earlier delay.

However, the overwhelmingly positive reception to the upcoming Renault 5 E-Tech electric and the Renault 4, both modern electric revivals with strong retro appeal, has played a significant role in securing the Twingo's UK arrival.

Cambolive emphasized the UK's importance in terms of automotive heritage and product recognition, stating, "I’ve followed closely the reaction to the R5 and R4 [in the UK], and with Twingo the exercise will be even more interesting because it’s not only sportiness, agility, design and practicality but we can play on versatility."

He further highlighted the Twingo's potential as a key mobility solution for the UK, acknowledging the past delay but firmly stating his commitment: "You couldn’t have the genuine Twingo in 1992, because right-hand drive didn’t arrive until a generation after, but I will put all my pressure and my attention to get the Twingo for the UK as soon as possible [after it is launched in mainland Europe]."

Cambolive admitted that making the business case work for a right-hand drive Twingo had presented challenges. However, a significant factor in securing its UK future is the recent confirmation that Renault will also produce an electric city car based on the Twingo platform for Nissan. This collaboration likely helps to offset the costs associated with the right-hand drive conversion.

Speaking about this, Cambolive noted, “It’s a challenge. We have to be very accessible when we speak about B-segment cars. Each time we are adding diversity and cost, it’s a kind of trade-off we have to do. But when I look at the strong start of sales of R5 in the UK, I don’t want to miss the opportunity to launch Twingo in the UK.”

With a target starting price of under €20,000 (£16,700) in mainland Europe, the all-electric Twingo promises to be an accessible and stylish urban EV. Its compact size, agility, and now confirmed right-hand drive availability make it a very exciting prospect for UK city dwellers.

Here at Renault Retail Group, we're eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new Renault Twingo and will keep you updated on its launch timeline. Get ready to welcome back an icon, reinvented for the electric age! Stay tuned for more news!
