Renault Emblème: Driving Towards a Net-Zero Future, One Innovative Wheel at a Time

At Renault Retail Group, we're not just selling cars; we're invested in a sustainable future for mobility. That's why we're incredibly excited to share details about Renault Emblème, a ground-breaking "laboratory on wheels" pushing the boundaries of low-carbon automotive design and engineering.

Responding directly to the urgent challenges of climate change and resource conservation, Renault is building upon the exploratory work initiated with the Scenic Vision concept in 2022. Emblème isn't just another concept car; it's a working prototype of a spacious, comfortable, and high-tech family vehicle designed with an unwavering focus on achieving unprecedented levels of decarbonisation.

The Emblème project understands that tackling decarbonisation requires a holistic approach. Every stage of the vehicle's life cycle – from the initial eco-design and resource selection to production, use, and end-of-life – has been meticulously analysed and optimised.

Developed by Ampere, Renault Emblème serves as a powerful demonstration of this comprehensive strategy. This vision of a low-carbon family car, from its inception to its eventual recycling, aims to emit a staggering 90% less greenhouse gases (CO2eq) over its entire life cycle compared to a 2019 baseline.

A Symphony of Sustainable Choices:

Every technical, technological, and stylistic decision behind the Renault Emblème was driven by stringent specifications, targeting new heights in low-carbon mobility. This project explores intelligent, credible, and viable combinations across resources, materials, production processes, energy efficiency during use, and end-of-life recovery.

The results are remarkable: Emblème achieves a 70% reduction in the carbon footprint for the production of all its parts. Furthermore, 50% of the materials used to build the car are recycled, and virtually all materials are recyclable at the end of the vehicle's life. Engineers and designers collaborated tirelessly to optimise aerodynamics and energy efficiency, culminating in an elegant, 4.80-meter long shooting brake that seamlessly blends striking style with cutting-edge interior technology and a drastically reduced carbon footprint.

Step inside the Renault Emblème, and you're greeted by a cabin of contemporary, poetic design, inviting you on a journey into the future of sustainable travel. Innovative technologies abound, including a breath taking new wide openR panorama screen that spans the entire length of the dashboard.

Powering this vision of low-carbon mobility is a dual-energy electric powertrain housed beneath the rear floor, combining electricity and hydrogen – an ideal pairing for longer, low-emission journeys alongside efficient urban driving.

The Science Behind the Sustainability: Life Cycle Analysis:

The foundation of Emblème's remarkable achievements lies in a rigorous methodology based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). This scientific approach quantifies a vehicle's environmental impact from "cradle to grave," meticulously accounting for raw material extraction, component production, vehicle assembly, transport, use, maintenance, and recycling. Renault Group utilizes this international, multi-criterion tool to calculate the global warming potential associated with greenhouse gas emissions, measured in CO2 equivalent (CO2eq) per vehicle, over a typical lifespan of 200,000 km and 15 years.

To put this into perspective, a Megane E-Tech electric emits 25 tonnes of CO2eq during its life cycle – practically half the amount of an equivalent fossil fuel model like a 2019 Captur petrol (50 tonnes of CO2eq). The Emblème project, through its radical innovations, achieves an astonishing total of just 5 tonnes of CO2eq from cradle to grave – a reduction of almost 90%! This figure has been meticulously calculated and audited by independent experts at IFPEN (Institut Français du Pétrole et des Energies Nouvelles), solidifying its credibility.

A Collaborative Ecosystem for a Greener Future:

Achieving this ambitious target demanded an ultra-efficient eco-design approach by Ampere, integrated from the initial sketches to the selection of every component. The pursuit of CO2eq savings permeated every stage, from exterior styling and interior material production to powertrain development.

Furthermore, the Renault Emblème project was a collaborative effort involving over twenty expert partners across the automotive ecosystem. Each partner brought their unique technology and know-how to the table, working alongside Renault and Ampere to optimise decarbonisation without compromising on value or quality. From innovative door handles made with recycled content by AKWEL to lightweight, high-strength steel body parts from ArcelorMittal, single-material recyclable insulation by Autoneum, eco-designed alloy wheels by Dicastal, and optimised low-rolling resistance tires by Michelin, every component was reimagined with sustainability in mind.

The interior, crafted with recycled and natural materials like linen and pineapple by Forvia, features a "Shy Tech" approach, replacing conventional controls for a more durable and minimalist design. Even the headlights, developed by Forvia Hella, aim to halve their lifecycle CO2eq emissions through innovative lens technology and material choices. Aluminium doors from Constellium utilize both low-carbon primary and recycled aluminium, showcasing the circularity potential of this material. Electronic components from ST Microelectronics leverage advanced SiC technology for greater energy efficiency, while Valeo's innovative wiper system significantly reduces CO2eq emissions through recycled materials and optimized design. The electric battery, designed by Verkor with a future production projection towards 2035, targets a remarkable 72% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional batteries. Even the seat upholstery utilizes a unique additive synthesis process with recycled polyester, eliminating the need for dyes and further reducing the carbon footprint.

The Future of Low-Carbon Mobility is Here:

Renault Emblème is more than just a concept; it's a tangible demonstration of Renault Group's commitment to a net-zero future. It showcases the incredible potential of a holistic, collaborative approach to automotive design and manufacturing. While not a production model in its current form, the innovations and technologies showcased in Emblème, developed by Ampere, will undoubtedly pave the way for more sustainable and environmentally responsible vehicles in Renault's future lineup.

Stay tuned to Renault Retail Group for further updates on Renault's journey towards low-carbon mobility and the exciting technologies that will shape the cars of tomorrow!
