The Renault 5 E-Tech electric has officially won over UK drivers, taking home the overall 'Style & Design' award in the inaugural Electric Road UK EV Owners Poll Awards.
Unlike traditional industry awards decided by a panel of journalists, these awards are based entirely on real-world feedback from thousands of electric vehicle drivers across the UK. Participants were asked to highlight the features they value most about their cars, and more owners selected styling and design as something they "really like" about the Renault 5 E-Tech electric than any other EV on the market.
The award highlights how successfully Renault transformed its widely praised 2021 concept car into a production model, retaining the cheeky, boxy silhouette of the iconic 1970s original while infusing it with modern, high-tech features.
Russell Whitehouse, Co-Owner of Electric Road, noted:
"The Renault 5 E-Tech electric was the clear overall winner... For Renault 5 owners, it successfully executes a retro-futurist design that taps into deep automotive nostalgia while feeling entirely modern."
Real owners were equally enthusiastic in their feedback. One driver called it the "best looking retro car ever made," while another admitted that the car's bold look completely changed their mindset about electric driving:
"It looks fantastic. I was an 'I'll never go EV' until I saw the R5 and fell in love with it."
The results from the Electric Road poll reflect Renault’s own findings. In a recent survey of over 1,600 electric Renault drivers, design was cited as the primary reason for purchase by 64% of respondents, a figure that jumped to 71% specifically among Renault 5 E-Tech electric owners.
Adam Wood, Managing Director of Renault UK, expressed his pride in the award:
