What is ULEZ?

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) covers those parts of London that are contained within the A406 and A205. Anyone who drives a vehicle that isn’t ULEZ compliant in the zone will be required to pay the ULEZ charge.

What areas are affected by ULEZ? Currently, the ULEZ zone is defined by the North and South Circular Roads (although neither road are included).

Since the 29 August 2023, the ULEZ areas have expanded meaning that all London boroughs are now included.

What is the ULEZ charge? It’s £12.50, and it’s a daily charge levied at drivers of vehicles that don’t meet with ULEZ emission standards. If you own a non-ULEZ compliant vehicle which you drive through the ULEZ zone on, say, five consecutive days, you’ll be required to pay £62.50. Find Out More

Low Emission Cars

If you drive a low-emission car, you don’t need to worry about paying the ULEZ charge. All hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles are ULEZ compliant, which means there’s no daily charge to contend with. Furthermore, all Euro 4 petrol and Euro 6 diesel cars are exempt from ULEZ fees. Please note: if you live within the ULEZ zone and don’t drive, you are not required to pay the ULEZ charge.

ULEZ FAQs

What is the purpose of ULEZ?

It’s designed to significantly reduce air pollution in the capital. According to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in February 2023, ULEZ works: “This is beyond dispute,” he said. “It has already reduced toxic air pollution by almost half in central London, and by over a fifth in inner London.”

Are ULEZ and the Congestion Charge the same thing?

No. They are separate charges.

What happens if I don’t pay the ULEZ charge?

You risk a fine of up to £160.

How can I avoid paying the ULEZ charge?

If your vehicle isn’t ULEZ compliant, you could choose to drive around the zone rather than through it. Or with Retail Renault Group, you can trade your vehicle in for a vehicle that is ULEZ compliant. Further assistance is available with Transport for London’s scrappage scheme.
